Humanities Art

CCDS 2007-2008

Course Syllabus

Realizing the connection between Art, History, and Literature, the Humanities department has introduced a series of classes to provide instruction for developing artistic skill sets. Some skills often associated with artists include, but are not limited to: an ability draw subjects realistically, breaking down and displaying time, and coming up with creative solutions. Students will be encouraged to understand how to integrate these skills into their daily lives, and observe the close relationship between Art, History and Literature.

Class Goals:

  1. Students will display a working knowledge of how to represent the world in front of them.
  2. Students will be able to speak about their art and the philosophy behind their thinking.
  3. Students will create their own artistic works.
  4. Students will be able to relate their own experiences in History and Literature to the audience.

Class Grading:

  1. Journals: Journals will best represent the students’ progress in the world of art. Students will be given a journal assignment each week to be completed for the following class.
  2. Studio Project: Studio Projects will be larger projects based heavily on the theme of the current humanities content. These projects will help to display skills learned through the journal exercises and in-class assignments.
  3. Large Project: Once every two quarters the students will be expected to complete a larger work of art based on their experiences in class.
  4. In-class Work: The daily exercises will be collected as well as class participation.

Grading System:

  1. Completion of Task 33% - Finishing assigned work or exercise will be worth a third of the grade.
  2. Technical Component 33% - Each assignment will have a set of skills associated with it. These will change from assignment to assignment, but students will be expected to show development in those areas.
  3. Artist Statement 34% - Students will be required to explain their idea in either a written or verbal form.
