Week 1, September 18/19

Find two household objects that you find interesting. Using two methods draw the objects twice. One of each of the drawing sets must be done in the scientific (grid) method.

Week 2, September 25/26

Pick five trees around campus or your home. Draw the trees using the blind contour method and then fill in the entire drawing with opaque media. The final result should appear as a silhouette of the tree.

Week 3, October 2/3

Complete 2 monochrome paintings. The paintings should be done using water colors and should have a distinct color choice. Analogous colors can be used to create lighter and darker tones in the work.

Week 4, October 9/15

Mandala. WORTH THREE SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS. Students should complete the Mandalas that we began in class. Mandalas are to be done using the water color medium, with an emphasis on layering the colors.

Week 5, October 16/17

Draw a picture of something that doesn't exist. Make sure that you vary the line width to show the foreshortened areas.

Week 6, October 23/24

Complete four individual drawings that demonstrate the four types of basic shading; Block shading, Line Shading, Cross Hatching, and Stippling.

Week 7, November 6/7

Using graphite or charcoal, draw a picture of a bird that displays a knowledge of value and shading.

Due in three weeks.

Week 8, November 27/28

Following the comic book process, sketch, ink, and color the image on the paper received in class.

Week 9, January 8/9

Large narrative composition. WORTH FOUR SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS. Student should create a large composition using elements of color, shading, and form to tell a story. The work should be a single image, dividing the picture plain is not allowed.

Week 10, January 15/16

Create a storyboard based on Roman history or the Aneid. This piece should be no less than six panels long and each panel should be no smaller than a quarter of a skecth book page.

Week 11, January 22/23

The final installment of the sequential art section requires that you create a two page comic book containing no less than two panels. The project must be inked, but color is optional. This assignment will be worth two sketch book assignments.

Week 12, February 26/27

Create a mosaic no smaller than 11x17. The subject matter is your choosing, but the Tessera must be composed of ripped up magazine pages no larger than a quarter. WORTH TWO SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS.

Week 13, March 4/5

Upside down drawing. Locate a picture of a drawing (NO PHOTOGRAPHS). Cut the picture out and place it in your sketchbook upside down. Draw the image upside down, without turning the picture over.

Week 14, March 12/13

Surrealist Image. Cut three pictures from a magazine and glue them on a sketchbook page in a surreal manner. The image must then be redrawn, and at least one of the pictures has to be distorted in some way. WORTH TWO SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS.

Create a drawing inspired by or in the style of your favorite Artist.

Week 16 May 6/7

FINAL PROJECT. Compose a painting which illustrates your ultimate nightmare. The painting must be done on stonehenge paper and must have five distinct tones of ink wash. PROJECT IS WORTH 400 POINTS.
